China Expands Taiwan Pressure With Coast Guard Patrols as Russia-China Naval Drills Begin

China Expands Taiwan Pressure With Coast Guard Patrols as Russia-China Naval Drills Begin

China is expanding its maritime pressure on Taiwan through an unprecedented combination of coast guard patrols in waters east of the island and joint naval exercises with Russia, as Beijing seeks to assert control over the Taiwan Strait and project power into the Pacific.

A Chinese coast guard task force has been conducting what Beijing calls "law enforcement" patrols in waters east of Taiwan—the second such operation near Taiwan's eastern waters within a month—while Russian Pacific Fleet warships have arrived in Qingdao for Joint Sea-2026 exercises that will run through July 13.

Coast Guard Expansion East of Taiwan

For years, Chinese coast guard activity around Taiwan focused primarily on the Taiwan Strait separating the island from mainland China. The expansion into waters east of Taiwan represents a significant escalation, putting Chinese vessels closer to critical shipping lanes and American military bases in the region.

Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration confirmed it has been tracking the Chinese deployments, reporting that Chinese vessels established radio contact with commercial ships transiting the area. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council responded firmly, stating that China has "no sovereignty, jurisdiction, or law enforcement authority" in the waters east of Taiwan.

Russia-China Naval Cooperation Deepens

The Maritime Interaction-2026 exercises bring together significant naval forces from both nations. Russian warships, including the guided missile cruiser Varyag, arrived at the naval base in Qingdao over the weekend to participate in drills in the Yellow Sea.

Following the exercises, Chinese and Russian forces will conduct joint maritime patrols in the Pacific Ocean, according to China's Ministry of National Defense. The combined operations signal deepening military cooperation between the two nations at a time of heightened tensions with the United States and its allies.

International Concern Growing

China's expanding coast guard operations have drawn sharp attention from the United States and several European allies. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have all expressed concern, viewing freedom of navigation and stability in the Taiwan Strait as essential to regional and global security.

Taiwan has instructed its ships to reject any boarding demands from Chinese coast guard vessels, a directive that risks escalating encounters at sea. The dispute adds to already elevated tensions as Taiwan continues preparing for a potential Chinese military action while maintaining that war is not inevitable.

Beijing has long vowed to "reunify" with self-governing Taiwan and has not ruled out the use of force. Taiwan's government has significantly increased defense preparations in recent years, holding regular drills that rehearse both military and civilian responses to a potential Chinese attack.
