Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) warned last week that a "commie caucus" is headed to Congress, as the Republican Party intensifies its anticommunism messaging ahead of the November midterms. The New York congresswoman pointed to a wave of democratic socialist primary victories as evidence that the Democratic Party is shifting further left.

"The commie caucus is coming to Congress," Malliotakis declared on July 21, referencing the growing influence of candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Her comments came after multiple progressive and socialist-backed candidates upset establishment Democrats in primaries across the country.

Socialist Wave Rattles Democratic Establishment

The Republican focus on communism and socialism intensified after progressives and democratic socialists won several key primaries in recent weeks, in some cases ousting senior House Democrats aligned with party leadership. In New York City, democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani rode to electoral victory last year on promises of city-run grocery stores, free childcare, and rent stabilization.

Republicans argue that policies championed by DSA-aligned candidates—including government-run healthcare, rent control, and redistributive economic programs—represent a dangerous drift toward socialism. GOP strategists see an opportunity to make the "socialism" label stick to the broader Democratic Party.

Progressive Agenda Under Fire

The Congressional Progressive Caucus recently unveiled an "affordability agenda" that includes proposals for universal childcare and affordable housing. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) defended the approach, stating that "Democrats cannot politely nibble around the edges when taking on a rigged economic system."

But Republicans counter that such proposals would expand government control over the economy while adding trillions to the national debt. The GOP campaign arm has begun running ads tying vulnerable Democratic incumbents to socialist rhetoric and policies.

Critics on the right argue that voters in competitive districts are unlikely to embrace candidates pushing far-left economic agendas, especially amid ongoing inflation concerns and economic uncertainty.

Midterm Battle Lines Drawn

The internal Democratic primary battles have given Republicans a clear target heading into November. With control of the House at stake, the GOP strategy of painting Democrats as beholden to their socialist wing could resonate with moderate and independent voters.

House Democrats' campaign arm has waded into several competitive Democratic races this year, spending on candidates who party leaders believe would be stronger general election contenders. But the establishment has not always prevailed—in Arizona last week, the DCCC-backed candidate lost a primary to a more progressive challenger.

Malliotakis and other Republicans are betting that highlighting the socialist element within the Democratic coalition will prove effective in swing districts where such positions remain unpopular. With the midterms just months away, expect the "commie caucus" attacks to intensify as both parties fight for control of Congress.
