Pennsylvania Democrats Boot GOP Lawmaker Over Patriotic America 250 Flag Suit
Republican Rep. Eric Davanzo was removed from the Pennsylvania House floor for wearing an American flag-themed jacket commemorating America's 250th anniversary.
Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton ordered Republican state Representative Eric Davanzo removed from the House floor on Tuesday after the GOP lawmaker refused to remove his red, white, and blue American flag-themed suit jacket, igniting a fierce debate over patriotism and legislative decorum.
Davanzo, who represents Pennsylvania's 58th District in parts of Westmoreland County, said he wore the patriotic jacket to commemorate America's upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations, known as America 250. The incident occurred just days before the nation's July 4th festivities marking the semiquincentennial.
'I Was Simply Celebrating America'
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Davanzo expressed disbelief at his removal from the chamber. The Republican lawmaker said McClinton deemed his American flag-themed jacket a violation of House dress code rules, though he maintains the suit was appropriate legislative attire.
"I was simply celebrating America during our 250th anniversary," Davanzo said, noting that Governor Josh Shapiro's own America250PA initiative has organized concerts and fairs from Pittsburgh to Wilkes-Barre celebrating the milestone.
It is not the first time this year Davanzo has drawn attention with patriotism-themed proposals on the House floor.
Democrats Defend Dress Code Enforcement
House Democrats defended the enforcement action, arguing that House rules establish standards of dress that all members must follow regardless of the occasion. Supporters of McClinton's decision noted that dress code rules exist to maintain decorum and are applied consistently to both parties.
However, Republicans seized on the incident as emblematic of what they describe as Democratic hostility toward traditional expressions of American patriotism.
America 250 Celebrations Amid Political Division
The incident highlights the tensions surrounding America's 250th birthday celebrations, which arrive amid deep political polarization. A recent New York Times report noted that the nation is "ringing in its 250th with rifts aplenty," questioning how a deeply divided country can come together for a national birthday party.
The America250 initiative, established by Congress, aims to engage all 350 million Americans in commemorating the nation's founding. The organization has promoted a "Giving 4th" initiative encouraging charitable contributions leading up to the semiquincentennial.
GOP Rallies Behind Davanzo
Republican lawmakers across Pennsylvania and nationally quickly rallied behind Davanzo, with many posting images of the flag-themed suit on social media and calling the ejection an attack on patriotic expression.
The controversy comes as both parties prepare for America 250 events across the country, with President Trump planning major announcements as part of the celebration. Davanzo has indicated he will continue wearing the suit during America 250 events, regardless of Democratic objections.
