Russian Missiles Kill 11 in Kyiv on Eve of NATO Summit

Russia launched a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital, killing at least 11 people just one day before NATO leaders gather in Turkey where President Trump will meet with Zelensky.

Russian Missiles Kill 11 in Kyiv on Eve of NATO Summit

Russian missiles and drones struck Ukraine's capital Kyiv in the early hours of Monday, killing at least 11 people and wounding dozens more in a massive overnight assault that came just one day before NATO leaders gather for a summit in Turkey.

The attack, which involved waves of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones, caused a residential building to partially collapse and damaged more than a dozen other structures across the city. Explosions echoed through the capital as civilians sought shelter in metro stations during the hours-long barrage.

Second Major Attack in Less Than a Week

Monday's assault was the second large-scale attack on Kyiv in recent days. Last Thursday, Russia pounded the capital with missiles and drones in a nearly 12-hour assault that killed 31 people and wounded more than 100 others, making it one of the deadliest attacks on the city since the war began.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the ballistic missile attack, with local authorities reporting that victims included at least five children among the 46 wounded. Rescue operations continued throughout the morning as emergency workers searched through rubble for survivors.

Timing Sends Clear Message to NATO

The attack's timing—on the eve of the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey—appears designed to send a message to Western leaders. President Trump is scheduled to attend the summit and meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with discussions expected to focus on the path toward ending the now four-year-old conflict.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed it conducted what it called a "massive" attack on Kyiv and other locations using long-range weapons and drones, though it claimed to be targeting military infrastructure rather than civilian areas.

Escalating Long-Range Warfare

Both Russia and Ukraine have expanded their use of long-range weapons in recent weeks, opening new fronts in the grinding conflict. Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian energy facilities and military infrastructure deep inside Russian territory, including a recent strike on a Moscow space communications center.

Ukraine has also intensified attacks on Russian-occupied Crimea, striking bridges and supply lines in an effort to raise the cost of occupation and sever logistics routes to the peninsula, according to analysis of satellite imagery and verified videos.

As NATO leaders prepare to convene, the attack underscores the urgency of discussions about security assistance and the broader question of how to bring the conflict to a resolution acceptable to Ukraine and its Western allies.
